Why is Material Testing Important?

Material testing is an essential process for manufacturers and product developers. It helps in the following areas:

  • Maintain product quality and consistency.
  • Avoid mistakes in the manufacturing process.
  • Comply with standards and regulations.
  • Ensure that materials are suitable for production and use.
  • Identify the cause of product failure during manufacture or use.
  • Certify new materials and products.

Types of Material Testing We Offer

Our material testing laboratory is equipped to perform a comprehensive range of materials testing to suit various industries and applications. Some of the most common tests we conduct include:

  • Tensile Testing – ASTM D638, ASTM D3039, ASTM D882
  • Slow Rate Penetration – ASTM F1306
  • Flexural Testing – ASTM D790
  • Shear Testing – ASTM D2344, ASTM D3518
  • Compressive Testing - ASTM D695, ASTM D6641
  • Drum Peel Testing - IGS 04.26.270, ASTM D1781
  • Resin Flow Testing – ASTM D3531
  • Resin Content Testing – ASTM D3529
  • Volatile Content Testing – ASTM D3530
  • Gel Time Testing – ASTM D3532
  • Lap Shear Testing – ASTM D1002
  • Flammability Testing – BSS 7230
  • Impact Testing – ASTM D2794, ASTM D4812
  • Saturation and Moisture Absorption Testing – ASTM D570, EN 2823
  • Void Content Testing – ASTM D2584, ASTM D2734
  • Hydrolytic Stability Testing – ASTM D3137
  • Hardness Testing – ASTM D3363, ASTM D2240
  • Adhesion Testing – ASTM D3359
  • Bending Testing – ASTM D522

Flammability Testing (BSS 7230)

This test evaluates the flammability of materials under fire conditions to ensure that products meet safety standards for fire prevention. Flammability testing is crucial for products used in applications where fire safety is paramount, such as in aerospace, automotive, and construction industries.

Impact Testing (ASTM D2794, ASTM D4812)

This testing measures the impact resistance of materials, which is critical for understanding how materials perform under sudden force or trauma. If the materials being tested are hazardous or prone to shattering, safety precautions are taken to prevent injury or exposure to dangerous fragments.

Volatile Content Testing (ASTM D3530)

This test measures the amount of volatile organic solvents and other ingredients of the composite material prepreg. The volatile components may remain in the material after curing and affect the properties of the composite material after curing.

Resin Flow Testing (ASTM D3531) and Resin Content Testing (ASTM D3529)

When testing composite materials, we evaluate how quickly liquid resin flows into a consolidated reinforcement stack of dry fibers under pressure.

These tests ensure that materials used in manufacturing are compliant.

Hydrolytic Stability Testing (ASTM D3137)

Some materials, particularly those exposed to moisture or water, may undergo chemical reactions that could cause changes to the mechanical properties of the materials.

Did you know, rubber and plastics after long exposure to the water, can became brittle? Hydrolytic stability testing assesses how materials respond to water exposure, ensuring that no changes in the mechanical properties occur.
